Contraception Spotlight: Exploring Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) in Suffolk

Choosing the right contraceptive method is a personal decision, and with various options available, it’s essential to find one that aligns with your lifestyle and health needs. Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) offers reliable, low-maintenance solutions for those seeking effective birth control.

What Is LARC?

LARC encompasses contraceptive methods that provide extended protection against pregnancy without requiring daily attention. These methods are reversible, normally allowing fertility to return promptly upon removal. LARC options include:

  • Contraceptive Implant: A small, flexible silicone rod inserted under the skin of the upper arm, releasing progestogen to prevent ovulation, thinning the lining of the womb and thickening the cervical mucous. Effective for up to 3 years.
  • Intrauterine Contraception (IUC): T-shaped devices placed in the uterus. They come in two types:
    • Hormonal Intrauterine System (IUS): Releases progestogen to thicken cervical mucus and thin the uterine lining. Effective for 3, 5 or 8 years, depending on device.
    • Copper Intrauterine Device (IUD): A hormone-free option that uses copper to prevent fertilisation and implantation. Effective for 5 or 10 years depending on device.
  • Contraceptive Injection: An injection of progestogen administered every 12 to 13 weeks, preventing ovulation, thickening cervical mucus and altering the uterine lining.

Benefits of LARC

  • High Effectiveness: LARC methods are over 99.9% effective in preventing pregnancy.
  • Low Maintenance: Once administered, they require minimal ongoing attention. Often called ‘fit and forget’ methods
  • Reversibility: Fertility typically returns quickly after removal. Fertility may take a little longer to return after using the injection method.
  • Cost-Effective: Over time, LARC can be more economical compared to other contraceptive methods.
