STI Spotlight: Understanding HIV and the Support Available in Suffolk

At Suffolk Sexual Health Service, we are committed to providing you with the knowledge and resources you need to maintain your sexual health. This month, we’re focusing on HIV – a topic that is crucial to understanding not just prevention but also support options available across Suffolk. Whether you’re looking for information on HIV testing, prevention, or how to access treatment, we’re here to support you every step of the way.

What Is HIV?

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus that weakens the immune system, making it harder for the body to fight infections. If HIV is left untreated, it will eventually turn into Late-Stage HIV, this is what was formally known as AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome). Whilst some people still use the term AIDS internationally or within medical communities, we like to refer to it as Late-Stage HIV due to advances in treatment and to reduce stigma that’s associated with the term “AIDS”. People who live with HIV can now manage their condition effectively and lead full health lives, and if they test early enough, will never receive a Late-Stage HIV diagnosis.

Why HIV Testing Is Important?

The only way to know for sure if you have HIV is to get tested. Many people with HIV don’t show symptoms for years, which is why regular testing is so important. Early diagnosis means you can begin treatment sooner, improving your health outcomes and reducing the risk of passing HIV on to others.

At Suffolk Sexual Health Service, we offer confidential and free HIV testing options:

  • In-Clinic Testing: Visit one of our local clinics for rapid, discreet testing.
  • At-Home Testing Kits: Get a discreet home testing kit delivered to your door.

Testing is fast, easy, and completely confidential. No appointment necessary!

Living with HIV: Support in Suffolk

While we don’t have a specific HIV support team at Suffolk Sexual Health Service, we ensure all our clients are fully supported with information, resources, and guidance for living well with HIV. We’re here to help you:

  • Manage your health: Access to information about HIV treatment options, managing your health, and tips for staying healthy.
  • Get the right referrals: If needed, we can refer you to other specialist services for additional support.
  • Address stigma: We understand that HIV-related stigma can be challenging, and we’re here to listen and help break down these barriers.

Breaking the Stigma

HIV stigma can make it harder for people to talk openly about their diagnosis or get the help they need. By breaking the silence and challenging myths about HIV, we can create a more inclusive, supportive environment for everyone. Remember, with the right treatment, people living with HIV can maintain an undetectable viral load, meaning they can’t pass the virus on to others—this is known as U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable).
